Severe transmission damage often requires the transmission to be rebuilt to repair it. Midwest Auto Care explains that this can be a cost-effective alternative to installing a new transmission. Your transmission will give you specific signs when it is failing to the point of a rebuild. Here are those signs. Bring your vehicle to our shop the minute you notice any of them to avoid further transmission damage.
Burning Smells
An old and damaged transmission can overheat. When this happens, the transmission fluid gets too hot and you will notice an odor of burning plastic. It’s important that you never continue to drive your automobile if you smell something burning. Not only can you cause further damage, but you might also end up with an engine fire if what is burning is diesel fuel or gasoline.
Failure to Shift
If your transmission’s gear teeth have worn out, it may not shift. It may not shift through the gear cycle, i.e., from first to second and so on, or it may not go into gear at all. This is a sign of a serious transmission problem that should not be ignored. It’s best to have your vehicle towed to our shop rather than try to drive it if it isn’t shifting gears through the cycle.
Strange Noises
A common sound that indicates that your transmission might need to be rebuilt is grinding when your vehicle is in neutral. You should never hear this sound. In minor cases, this could be a sign that you need to have a transmission fluid flush and refill. In most cases, however, this sound is being caused because you have worn out bearings in the transmission as well as an idler gear problem. If this is the case, the transmission will need to be rebuilt.
Fluid Leak
If your transmission is leaking fluid, you will see red spots or puddles underneath your automobile near the center. Transmission fluid can leak from the transmission pan as well as the pan gasket. It can also leak from the seals, hoses, or torque converter. Depending on how severe the leak is, your transmission may need to be rebuilt to prevent transmission fluid loss. Inspecting the transmission will give us the locations of the leaks and what it will take to fix them.
