Signs of a Leaking Exhaust Manifold

In our last blog post, we talked about a cracked head gasket. Now, let’s talk about a leaking exhaust manifold. Both problems can be caused by excess heat in the engine. This is why it is crucial that you avoid driving your automobile if the engine is overheating. If the exhaust manifold is cracked, you will have one or more of the following problems.

Performance Trouble

One thing that is easy to notice is engine performance trouble. The engine will not be able to perform efficiently and smoothly if it is filling up with exhaust from the leaking manifold. Unfortunately, you will have problems with the acceleration lagging in the engine sputtering.

Increased Consumption

These performance issues will increase the engine’s fuel consumption. Consequently, your vehicle will start to get poor gas mileage. The only way to restore your fuel economy is to restore the engine’s efficiency. This means replacing the exhaust manifold.

Hissing or Popping

Your engine can also make strange noises if the manifold is leaking. For example, if you hear hissing or popping when you fire up your automobile, these are the noises that the exhaust makes as it escapes out of the manifold. It may also sound like tapping.

Strong Rancid Odors

As we mentioned above, your engine is going to perform poorly because it is filling with exhaust. The exhaust is hot enough to overheat the engine and melt susceptible parts. Consequently, you will start to smell rancid odors coming from the engine.

Strong Exhaust Odors

Your nose might also detect exhaust odors in the passenger cabin. If this is the case, stop driving your automobile. When the exhaust manifold is leaking, the ventilation system can transfer the exhaust from the engine to the cabin. This makes driving your automobile dangerous.

Check Engine Warning

Finally, the leaking exhaust manifold is going to create problems that will cause system sensors to report error codes to the engine control unit. The unit cannot replace the manifold, so it will turn on the check engine light to let you know there’s a problem.

Do not worry. We are here to help, and we can replace the exhaust manifold if it is leaking. If you are having any of the problems listed above, call our shop to schedule a service appointment for your automobile. We will inspect the exhaust manifold and the manifold gasket. If either is cracked, we will replace the cracked part.
