If your clutch is sinking all the way to the floor without catching, it needs to be replaced. Midwest Auto Care would be happy to inspect your clutch to see if it can be repaired. If it cannot, don’t worry. We can replace the factory clutch in your car, truck, or utility vehicle with a new one. Aside from sinking all the way to the floor, here are other signs that your clutch is going bad.
Burning Odors From the Clutch
If you smell burning odors coming from the clutch, it’s possible that the clutch is unable to stay engaged. This is called “slipping,” and it can make shifting the gears difficult. You never want to smell anything hot in your automobile, including the clutch. If you notice a hot smell coming from the floorboard, it could be that your clutch is slipping and overheating.
Grinding Gears/Squeaking Sounds
Another sign that your clutch is not staying engaged is if the gears grind when you shift them. This is an indication that the clutch has not transferred the power from the engine to the transmission. Aside from burning odors and grinding gears, you should not hear your clutch squeak or squeal when you press down on and release it. Using the clutch should be silent.
Hesitation When Accelerating
As we just mentioned, the clutch is responsible for taking the power away from the engine temporarily so that the transmission can use power to turn the drivetrain. If your vehicle hesitates when you release the clutch and press down on the accelerator to pick up speed, this is a sign that the clutch is not transferring the power to the transmission.
Higher Clutch Catch Point
Aside from sinking all the way to the floor, another change in how your clutch feels underneath your foot is a higher catch point. This is a sign that the clutch needs to be adjusted at a minimum. In some cases, adjusting the clutch will not restore the original catch point. If this is the case with your automobile’s clutch, we will need to replace it.
Problems Shifting the Gears
Finally, a faulty clutch will make shifting the gears nearly impossible. You will have problems getting your car, truck, or utility vehicle into gear. You may also have problems shifting the transmission through the gear cycle. This is definitely a sign that you need a new clutch.
